The MLS record describes a 6,094 sq ft Craftsman-style cottage built in 1905 with 7 bedrooms and 4 full baths on 3.33 acres. The brokerage remarks call it a 6-bedroom estate, and the county roll lists 8 bedrooms. The listing credits the design to New York City architect John W. Ingle.
Brokerage remarks list a 3,000 sq ft curved porch set on 16 stone pillars, a two-story boathouse with an award-winning apartment above 3 covered slips, a private lagoon, coves and a gazebo. They describe 270° views toward Dome Island, Tongue Mountain and Black Mountain.
History
The name, 1777. A British artillery officer, Lt. James Hadden, wrote in a July 1777 journal entry that his unit anchored at “14 Mile Island,” counted from Fort George at the south end of the lake. Adirondack Architectural Heritage notes the true distance is closer to 12 miles; the name stuck.
A steamboat stop. In the 19th century a sportsmen’s lodge on the island grew into the Fourteen Mile Island House, a hotel for more than 40 guests. By 1890 the Delaware and Hudson Company had built a steamboat pier on the island’s east side.
The 1905 cottage. The island became a private summer retreat in 1905, when New York architect John W. Ingle designed the present cottage for its then-owner. Published accounts say Ingle camped on the island to study its light before drawing the plans. The design uses high clerestory windows, and the porch is set off from the house to let more light into the rooms. The current owners’ family has held the island property since 1960.
The boathouse. Ice damage in 2010 twisted the boathouse on its supports. The repair kept the original floors, French doors and hardware and added a cedar-shingle roof. Adirondack Architectural Heritage gave the 14 Mile Island Boathouse (Town of Bolton) a Preservation Award in 2019.
Location
14 Mile Island sits mid-lake in the Town of Bolton at the southern entrance to the Narrows, where the lake tightens between Tongue Mountain on the west and the Shelving Rock and Black Mountain shore on the east. It is reached only by boat; Bolton Landing and The Sagamore are a short boat ride to the west. The island holds several separately owned parcels. This listing matches county parcel 172.02-1-1, the island’s one-family residence on the 2026 roll (our match, from living area, year built and the listing pin).
